Sports Betting Recap: A Very Chalky NFL Week 9

Point Spread updates.  If you like to bet the dogs like I do, Sunday afternoon at 1:00 PM was brutal.    The Chalk (teams that are favored)  went 5-2 both SU and ATS. The underdogs that won outright were the Steelers and Falcons,  and you could have called the Steelers a favorite based on how much action they get every week, no matter what the spread is . Either way, both teams were slight road dogs; each getting 1.5-points by the time we kicked off at Wannamakeabet.com.   Here’s our sports betting recap for week 9 of the NFL.

The Bears dominated Buffalo on the road as a 10-point favorite, 41-9. Chicago moved to 5-3 ATS this season. The Chiefs cruised over the Browns in Cleveland, 37-21, as an 8.5-point favorite. Kansas City is now an NFL-best 8-1 ATS. Overall, five of seven games were decided by double-digits.   The most exciting hour in the NFL, between 3:30 and 4:30 EST was downright boring.   By the end of the day, things evened out as you can see from the chart below:

Totally Tampa.  The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the NFL’s over darling of the sports betting year.  They hit the ‘over’ again in their divisional road battle against the Carolina Panthers, losing 42-28. The Bucs moved to 7-1 on over results so far this season.  That’s the most overs in the NFL. Also in the NFC South, the over is 6-2 for the Atlanta Falcons, hitting again in the 38-14 victory on the road against the Washington Redskins.

Total Mud in Miami.  If you watched the Duke-Miami (Fla.) college football game, you saw crazy rains and the field at Hard Rock Stadium in terrible shape on Saturday night. Many sports bettors interpreted this as an Under play in the mud the following day and it ended up paying off with a total of 43.  Sure enough, there were zero offensive touchdowns (and one defensive score) in the 13-6 win for the home side, easily hitting the ‘under’.

Do low totals go under and high totals go over?  Perhaps.  But the lowest total on the board, Chicago Bears-Buffalo Bills (38) connected on the over as the Bears were able to take care of the ‘over’ themselves, winning 41-9. The 2nd and 3rd lowest totals on the board, the N.Y. Jets-Miami (43) and Oakland Raiders-San Francisco 49ers (44) each cashed on the ‘under’.

On the flip side of the number, three of the four highest totals on the board cashed in Week 9. It appears there is no total that the Saints or Rams can’t hit, almost by themselves.  The highest total was in the Rams- Saints (57.5) battle, and they combined for 80 points. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Carolina Panthers (55.5) and Kansas City Chiefs-Cleveland Browns (51.5) each hit the ‘over’. The only game with a listed total over 50 points to not go over was the Green Bay Packers-New England Patriots (56) battle on Sunday night.  That appeared to safe the bookmakers in Vegas and Jersey from an absolute bloodbath.  More to come on that later in the week.
