Podcast Picks

The 2024 Podcast season kicked off yesterday as hosts Jack and Cello returned to the mic to preview what’s left of Week #1.  Click here to listen to the Pod.  Spotify users click here.  We’ll be keeping track of our record in this newsletter just like year.  Here are our top 5 for this weekend.  All lines are from Wannamakeabet.com at the time of this newsletter.

Tennessee Titans + 4 over Chicago Bears – The market seems to be giving the Bears and rookie QB Caleb Williams a little too much credit for us in this opener.  And even though the Titans offense was among the league’s worst in 2023, new head coach Brian Callahan has a lot of credibility to get things back on track based on his days coaching the offense in Cincinnati.  Tennessee keeps this one inside a field goal and perhaps even steals it outright.

Seattle Seahawks -5.5 over Denver Broncos –

Continuing one of this week’s themes going against a rookie QB is Bo Nix welcome party to Seattle.  The Denver defense was ranked 30th last year by DVOA and there were no major additions in the off season.  Seattle has all the weapons they need on offense, and the addition of new head coach Mike McDonald, who was the architect of Baltimore’s #1 defense should bring a toughness to this defense and opening day that we didn’t see the past few years.

Tampa Bay  Bucs -3.5 over Washington Commanders

The third and final chapter of the anti-rookie QB picks comes to Tampa Bay on the late card.  The market believes rookie Jayden Daniels will be competitive in his first start on the road but we disagree.  Washington’s offensive line is among the worst in the league and their defense was ranked 30th last year.  There’s an entire new coaching staff led by Dan Quinn but this is a major project to fix and it won’t happen on the road in Week 1.  Baker, White, and Mike Evans are going to shred this defense and stone face defensive minded Todd Bowles will bring heat on the rookie QB.

LA Rams +4.5 over Detroit Lions

Great Sunday night re-match of last year’s NFC wildcard game that the Rams lost by a single point 23-24.  We see a very similar outcome tonight even though Aaron Donald is no longer leading the defensive line and there was a strange suspension of left tackle Alaric Jackson.   But despite the gaps up front, we still think the Rams have the offensive weapons to hang with any team in the league and we also give a coaching advantage to McVay over Campbell.

New York Jets +4 over San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers seemed to spend their offseason in contract negotiations getting their studs back on the sidelines and finally did.  But they may need a few more weeks to get back to their correct form.  CMC is a bit hobbled.  Aiyuk didn’t get many reps.  Trent Williams was not in camp and Debo may be a little fragile.  But this pick is about Aaron Rodgers. We’re rolling the dice that he captures his old form right out of the gate tonight because the defense is among the league’s best, we have the offensive line ranked #7 and Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson is all a QB could ask for.  J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets.

Good luck with your selections

Jack and Josh!
