Monday Morning QB 1/20 – Kicker and Teaser Hell

Wannamakeabettors,

We are down to the final four in the NFL and a single game to decide the College Footbal national championship in Atlanta tonight.  If there was ever a reason to love playing at Wannamakeabet.com, this weekend was it as every single game seem to highlight how difficult and lucky you need to be in order to be successful betting on football.

NFL / Private League / Degenerate Recap:

Texans / Chiefs: Kicker Hell

Mahomes continues to get the calls and the Houston defense came to play in the first game of the weekend on Saturday afternoon which set the tone for the cold weather in all the outdoor games.  The Chiefs held an 8 point lead late in the game and kicked a field goal to make it 11.  The Texans drove it down and needed two scores.  Kicker Ka’Imi Fairbairn became enemy number one of Houston bettors as he already missed a field goal earlier in the game and an extra point.  So when he had a filed goal blocked with under two minutes to play all the Chiefs bettors who were laying 11 breathed a huge sign of relief as the win and cover seemed to be well in hand.  Then Houston got a stop and the Chiefs were forced to punt.  And instead of punting, punter Matt Araiza sprinted into the back of the end zone and ran out to take a safety and win by 9.  I was at a dinner with six couples and exploded in joy at the TV in the corner as Houston got the cover and Chiefs bettors were left holding the bag.

Commanders / Lions: Teaser Hell

Right from the start, this game was going over.  But the bigger theme in this one is a long held expression by WANNA management as “Wreck the Teasers“.  There were so many bets across so many leagues this weekend that had the Lions at a pick’em or even getting 3 in the four teamers.  But the Lions defense could not get off the field as Jayden absolutely lit them up for 45 points and left Dan Campbell aghast and the Lions packing for the off-season.  That result ended the season for hudreds of members of WANNA.  If you ever say to yourself… “all they have to do is win the game”, please think again.

Eagles / Rams: Snow Bowl

What’s better than sitting in the comfort of your own living room and watching a football game in a blizzard.  Congrats to all our customers from Philadelphia who bet it all and were willing to go down with the ship if the Eagles lost yesterday. They prevailed despite making everyone sweat it out for the final four minutes after taking a 13 point lead.   Another game, more kicker drama. Up until that point in the game, Philly kicker Jake Elliot was drilling field goals in a blinding snow storm.  But when he missed the final extra point to take a 14 point lead, Eagle bettors all collectively started doing “gambler math” and realized they can’t give up another touchdown and still be covering the 6.5.  The Eagles, after a stifling defense all day long, went into the dreaded prevent and the Rams came right down and scored, made the extra point and cut the lead to six.  The next two minutes were heart wrenching as the Rams got a stop and the ball back and drove down again and were trying to score and win the game and shatter the entire city’s heart when their efforts fell short and they couldn’t convert on fourth and 10 from the 15.  Fly Eagles Fly.

Ravens / Bills: Lamar and Josh

Two of the three best quarterbacks in the league squared off against each other in another snow bowl, this one with frigid temperatures and the premier matchup of the weekend.  And Lamar’s weird head gator actually made sense in this one.  But he made mistakes early throwing a key interception and being careless with the ball that lead to another turnover.  Josh Allen was better last night.  But perhaps it was the poor play by tight end Mark Andrews that people will remember most.  Was it the inner psyche that feared being replaced by Isiah Likely?  We’ll never know, but the Bills advance to play the Chiefs next weekend for the AFC Championship as many people believe this may finally be Josh’s year.
