Another solid outing last going 3-2 bringing the season record to 41-38 (52 %) Here’s our top five this week. All lines are from Wannamakeabet.com at the time of this newsletter.
LA Chargers – 5.5 over New England Patriots –
A must win game for the Chargers today as they travel across the country to take on the Pats in the rain in what should be a low scoring affair. The Chargers activated JK Dobbins from IR yesterday so the running game should get some much needed help but this handicap is primarily driven by the fact that this line did not get juiced this week due to it being a must win game for the Chargers against a dead team in New England that ranks near the bottom of both offense and defense by DVOA.
Denver Broncos +3.5 over Cincinnati Bengals
Speaking of must-wins, here’s another one for both sides longing for that #7 spot in the AFC Wildcard this afternoon in Cincy and we’re going with the much better defense here. Cincy cannot stop anyone and tries to turn every game (except Browns games) into a track meet. But the Denver defense loves to blitz and ranks 4th overall and the weak offensive line of Cincy may easily crumble over the course of the afternoon. We love the hook here as this game likely comes down to the final possession and Sean Payton very comfortable and cool headed in high pressure situations. This is likely the end for the Bengals.
Indy Colts -7.5 over New York Giants
The Giants are two full points worse than any team in the league since the year 2020. On the flip side, the Colts are not eliminated from the playoffs (read: need wins and help) and seem to finally have figured out that to be their best, they must run the ball often. And with Jon Taylor and Richardson in the backfield, they should be able to have their way with a team that appears to have quit on their coach, the owners, and especially the poor people sitting in the rain with bags over their heads.
Atlanta Falcons +4.5 over Washington Commanders
Must win game for the Falcons as the Commanders have already likely locked up their playoff spot with 10 wins and the Bucs have an easier path to win the division and finish the season 2-0. Despite having a rookie QB in Penix in only his second start, the Falcons should be able to run the ball with Bigan and Allgeier against a Washington defense that ranks 25in the league against the run. Drake London also practiced in full yesterday so perhaps we see that cannon arm downfield. The Falcon defense has really looked inspired the past two weeks and we think that will be enough to keep them inside the number and possibly get the must-win here.
Detroit Lions -3.5 over San Francisco
Detroit hasn’t shown much mercy this season when playing teams of lesser caliber and we look for them to put an exclamation point on that theory on Monday night when they play the 49ers, who stole their dream of playing in the Super Bowl last year in this same spot. And if the Vikings win on Sunday over the Pack this is a must win game in order to secure the #1 seed and home field throughout the playoffs. Lions step on the throat.
And here’s a deep dive on this Lions/49ers game from our in house analyst Thomas Quaynor
Good luck with your selections.
