NFL fans were finally treated to a great game between two evenly matched teams. Many, including myself, were happy not to be staring at Tom Brady on the screen for yet another year and Bellichick marching up and down the sidelines with his patented hoody and discontented scowl.

The big surprise to bettors was the final score staying under the posted total of 54.5. This must have made Sportbooks from New Jersey to Las Vegas happy as the line moved up a full three points off the opener of 51 and clearly the public and professional handicappers alike thought these two teams would score a lot of points.

But the 49ers held the Chiefs in check for the first three quarters and the Chiefs did the same.  The score heading into the final frame was San Francisco 20-10.

But Patrick Mahones finally found Tyreek Hill for a big gain on 3rd and 15 that got the chiefs deep into 49er territory.   Shortly thereafter Mahomes found Travis Kelce for a touchdown that completed a 65 yard drive and cut the deficit to 20-17.    The momentum had officially changed.  Then the 49er offense stalled and they could not move the ball effectively, despite doing so relatively well for most of the game.

Kelce was the focus of another important ensuing drive as he was interfered with in the endzone that put the ball on the one yard line.  Damien Williams would score shortly thereafter.

But it was a drive that started with less than two minutes left in the game that was the most important for the sportsbetting world.   The 49ers failed to convert a fourth down and the Chiefs were on the field to essentially run out the clock, perhaps getting a first down or two in the process with the game sitting on the score of 24-20.

This would have locked up the Under and given all players that have San Francisco and the Under in a teaser the win.   But Damien Williams took the ball around the left end and sprinted into the end zone for 38 yards and sealed the game.  It also ruined all the 49er and under teasers and brought the Over teasers into a winning situation as the total points were now 51.  This was the biggest play of the game not only for the Chiefs because it sealed the victory but for all bettors on both sides of the game as well.

And that’s how it usually goes with Sports Betting.  One play typically determines the outcome as it relates to the spread, and it happened yet again on the biggest stage in sports.
