Thursday Bases – Can The Pittsburgh Pirates Kuhl Down San Diego?

There is only one thing that is standing in the Pittsburgh Pirates way today as they take the diamond…..the rain. Seeing as how this is the only time that these two teams face off all year they will do whatever they can in order to get these games in.

In his last three starts Chad Kuhl is 1-1 (the 1 loss coming vs. the Washington Nationals) and has gone 17.2 innings with 17 k’s and 7 earned runs allowed. Maybe not the most impressive stat line but those were against much superior lineups (SF, MIL, WSH) than the San Diego Padres who come into this game batting just .228 collectively on the season. Factor in that the San Diego Padres are bringing out a young starting pitcher with an era over 8 and WHIP over 2, the Pirates have to be getting excited for tonights game. The downside to Eric Lauer being on the mound is that the Pirates will most likely be forced to sit two bright spots in Corey Dickerson and Colin Moran due to a lefty pitcher. Dickerson is hitting .318 on the year with 21 runs and 27 RBI to go along, while Moran is sitting at .292 with 15 and 21. However coach Clint Hurdle just does not feel comfortable sending them out their against southpaws. Even without these two sluggers look for Pittsburgh to get up early and put up some runs!

Prediction: Pittsburgh Pirates-1.5 over San Diego Padres
