Detroit Lions / Chicago Bears Preview – Same Old Lions?

Detroit(2-6) travels to Chicago(3-6) in an NFC North matchup, Chicago is a 3 point favorite. Detroit is coming off a 15-9 upset win at home against the Green Bay Packers, continuing Aaron Rodgers season of discontent. The win snapped a 5-game losing streak. Detroit came into the Green Bay game with one of the worst defenses in the NFL, but only gave up 9 points and intercepted A.Rodgers three times.
Detroit’s offense is capable of putting up a lot of points led by former #1 overall pick Jared Goff, a two headed running back attack in Jamaal Williams and the oft-injured D’Andre Swift, and wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown. The offense has cooled off considerably over the past four games(15, 31, 6, 0) compared to the first four games(35, 36, 24, 45), Detroit recently traded star tight end/former 1st round pick T.J. Hockenson to Minnesota which may indicate it’s TANKING TIME yet again for this franchise!
As for Chicago, most people spent the past season and a half questioning whether Justin Fields is a starting quarterback in the NFL and wondered if Chicago made a mistake when they traded up 9 spots to select him number 11 overall in the 2021 draft. That decision wasn’t looking good for Chicago until they went to New England about three weeks ago and soundly defeated Bill Belichick’s Patriots(33-14), due in large part to J.Fields scrambling abilities. His 178 rushing yards last week against Miami set an NFL record for rushing yards by a quarterback and singlehandedly kept them in the game until the last minute.
It appears as if J.Fields has turned the corner and will now instill a Lamar Jackson type of fear onto opposing defenses. Chicago also traded for Pittsburgh wideout Chase Claypool which should upgrade their receiving unit.
Chicago has won 7 of the last 8 matchups against Detroit, Justin Fields has now channeled his inner Lamar Jackson/Michael Vick and most importantly, the Detroit Lions are still the Detroit Lions…Chicago 38, Detroit 27
