The college football world was one big Tilt-A-World of fun last week. Starting in the Sun Belt, how do you adjust teams like Appalachian State who was clearly not prepared for 25 mph winds or Georgia Southern that redeemed itself after struggling to put away South Alabama and Coastal Carolina?

In perfect weather and with a traditionally ran offense what is the outcome and how much can we deduct from what we witnessed in a one-game sample size? Nonetheless hats off to Georgia Southern who while pedestrian looking at times might be terrific after all.

Baylor was life and death against West Virginia at home on ESPN. It doesn’t give me that good vibe feeling I was hoping for that they can beat Oklahoma in a couple weeks. As much as I adore Matt Rhule, he’s never been a blow-you-out type of coach.

NC State losing to Wake Forest was somewhat expected but to only create 260 yards of offense and get shutout in the second half is embarrassing — on the heels of an embarrassing loss to Boston College. You have to wonder where this young program is going?

Staying in the ACC. Boston College blew the doors off a dead Syracuse team who’s so injured along the offensive line that they purposely ran out the clock in the fourth quarter to attempt to stay injury free. No team has given up more quarterback pressures and the defense has now officially caved after being asked to stay on the field for 45 minutes a game some days. Great coaches have bad years but this is the kind of year that makes you wonder if Dino Babers sticks around or jumps at first offer? Looks like a long rebuild moving forward.

Akron is 0-9 SU and ATS. Anyone know who has the second worst ATS record in FBS? How about Nebraska at 1-8 ATS. Can you believe they were favored to beat out Minnesota and Wisconsin and that Martinez was on odds boards to win the Heisman?! Me neither.

Northern Illinois (3-6) made a hire for future years the season after winning the MAC. Despite an ultra-slow pace and hard-to-watch style, the Huskies won games under Rod Carey. Which would you rather be New Mexico State or go bowling? I guess they didn’t see this coming and I honestly didn’t either.

I think Houston is a better team without a D’Eriq King. They don’t play any defense but they do play better offensively with a better mix of run and pass. Sucks for me as I continue to play against them.

Troy continues to lose games in weird ways and Coastal Carolina continues to deal me bad beats. Coastal converted three fourth downs, scored, and instead of kicking the extra point (I had Troy -1) they go for two, fail but are bailed out by a flag, and then score on the retry to win 36-35. In a year of terrible first-year head coaches, Troy’s Chip Lindsey is making his presence felt. Ten wins to missing a bowl with 13 of same starters isn’t easy to pull off.

What exactly is Florida State doing? Did Willie Taggart bring in Kendall Briles to slow the offense down and for them to also not run the ball? Miami looked flat out dominant with really no need for a offense. Is Taggart going to get $27 million to coach two years?! That’s insane but par for the course considering the dysfunction in Tallahassee.

Oklahoma State lost the best wide receiver in the country for the season and still beat an incredible defensive TCU team. OSU and Kansas State are the shock to my system type of programs that can really make some noise. The Wildcats looks like an amped-up version of their normal self and the Cowboys boast the best running back in the country and a stud freshman quarterback but also play zero run defense. This is exactly what a great Mike Gundy team looks like!

Georgia beat Florida in a ultra boring game.  I didn’t learn anything but figured I’d point it out because it’s newsworthy to people who follow the SEC that whoever wins Alabama-LSU will play Georgia. I will say that I have downgraded the Dawgs seven points from last year’s team. That offense is meant to do just enough. Jake Fromm is terrific but has no one to throw to.

Utah finally beat Washington as predicted and did so scoring a lot of points. Kudos to Kyle Whittingham who I’ve said for years is one of the most underrated head coaches in the game. On the flip side, Chris Petersen is maybe the most overrated. He took a team with 15+ return starters and no recruiting competition for five years to 10 win seasons. Year 1 of inexperience? The Huskies are .500.

Kevin Sumlin isn’t even capable of feigning effort when Arizona fell behind early to Oregon State. He chased points in the first quarter knowing his defense was toast. He will make a terrific offensive coordinator for an SEC or ACC school in two years.

Western Kentucky was the story of C-USA early on but after impressive wins against slow paced offenses like UAB, Army and Old Dominion, they have now been beaten up by Marshall and Florida Atlantic in back-to-back weeks and their offense, which is one dimensional, looked very suspect.

An anomaly of high scoring games took place in the late slots with Cincinnati-East Carolina and Virginia-North Carolina doubling their expected totals. Both superior teams won but the Pirates are quickly emerging as a team to watch going forward.

Did UNLV’s soon-to-be free agent head coach Tony Sanchez play to lose by little as possible? The second half saw the Rebels play with zero sense of urgency after trailing 24-0 at half. And while its obvious they’ll move on in December many forget that whoever gets this job is inheriting a unbelievable cast of recruits. Rebuilding their moral is the concern now.

Speaking of soon-to-be fired head coaches. USC’s Clay Helton is going to get every quarterback that he recruited injured by years end. Why when up 10-0 and driving would he not call one run play? Yes, it’s an Air Raid offense but one that is very predictable.

Utah State’s Gary Andersen quit on his last two teams and in keeping with tradition inherited an 11-win team that is on the verge of missing a bowl. Thank God for Stony Brook. It’s amazing how he took a sure fire NFL quarterback and wrecked every aspect of the team. The Aggies do nothing well.

Enjoy the big game this week. It’s not everyday we get a huge marquee matchup like this one on Saturday at 12:30 PT. UAB at Southern Miss has it all!
