Week 10 of the NFL is in the books with only the Giants/49ers game on Monday night still on tap. If last week was one of the worst of several years for bookmakers in Las Vegas and New Jersey, this past weekend must have been one of the best. Not only were underdogs barking, they were winning outright and eliminating any chance that a favorite could cash a ticket through a proposition bet like a Teaser.
Sports bettors far and wide love to play teasers. View our video tutorial about these bets here. A common teaser bet to make is when team is laying less than a touchdown and you can use a 6 or 7 point teaser to move the line down to Pick-Em, which essentially means all they have to do is win the game.
That was exactly the thinking that went into backing the Patriots, Falcons, Eagles, and Jets this weekend.
The Pats headed to Tennessee to take on the titans and the line at Wannamakeabet.com was Pats -6 at kickoff. The Pats were thoroughly beaten by the Titans as they won the game 34-10. Even four team teasers, where you have 13 points to play with, weren’t enough.
We saw the same thing happen in Cleveland. Although more bettors believed the Browns could be competitive in this game (closing line at WANNA was Atlanta -5) no teaser could save the dirty birds from an outright loss on all fronts as the Browns won the game easily by a score of 28-16.
Another example was the Buffalo Bills getting 7.5 from the New York Jets. Coming into the game the Bills looked like they might not score again this season. But 4th string quarterback Matt Barkley came into the game and absolutely lit up the Jets and destroyed any Jet teaser that may have been on a ticket. The Bills won the game 41-10.
And just to ice the cake to end the teaser wrecking day, the Dallas Cowboys came into NFC east division rival Philadelphia Eagles as a 7.5 point dog. On the opening series Carson Wentz threw a pick and it was an uphill battle for the rest of the night for the Eagles. Zeje Elliott rushed for over 100 yards and two touchdowns and the Cowboys won the game outright 27-20.
It wasn’t all ugly. Some of the big favorites took care of business. The Saints blew out the Bengals (51-14) and the Packers did the same to the Dolphins (31-12). Either way, the bookies across the country must have breathed a sigh of relief to finally see some underdogs bark in a big way this weekend. The house doesn’t always win but this weekend they certainly did.
