College Football Chaos: UCF Stuns No. 2 BYU as Three Top 10 Teams Fall

College football apparently looked at last weekend’s chaos and decided there was room for more.

Saturday, October 24 delivered another round of upsets, nervous finishes and playoff headaches. No. 2 BYU, No. 7 Ole Miss and No. 8 Texas Tech all went down, while five unranked teams knocked off ranked opponents. If your picks depended on the little number next to a team’s name, you probably spent part of Saturday questioning your process.

Here’s how the biggest games unfolded, with all rankings reflecting where teams stood entering the weekend.

UCF Delivers the Biggest Shock

UCF 39, No. 2 BYU 31 — Double Overtime

BYU arrived in Orlando undefeated. It left with its first loss and a much more complicated road ahead.

UCF finished the upset in double overtime, scoring a touchdown and converting the two-point attempt before its defense stopped BYU. The victory was the Knights’ first over a Top 5 opponent.

For BYU, the frustrating part is how quickly the conversation changes. One week you’re building a case near the top of the rankings. One road loss later, everyone wants to examine your remaining schedule.

The Cougars still have plenty to play for. But their margin for another bad Saturday just got smaller.

Cincinnati Takes Down Texas Tech

Cincinnati 37, No. 8 Texas Tech 24

BYU wasn’t the only unbeaten Big 12 contender to get caught.

Cincinnati handed Texas Tech its first defeat, giving the conference a second major upset and turning what looked like an orderly championship race into a crowded argument.

This is the danger of assuming a highly ranked team will eventually find a way. Sometimes the underdog keeps answering, the favorite runs out of possessions, and that expected comeback never arrives.

For Texas Tech, the challenge now is responding without letting one loss become two. For everyone chasing the Red Raiders, Saturday opened a door.

Texas Gets a Win It Desperately Needed

No. 19 Texas 34, No. 7 Ole Miss 27

Texas stopped its two-game losing streak with a victory over Ole Miss, preserving its playoff hopes while handing the Rebels their second defeat.

This was a rankings upset, although those rankings alone don’t tell you which team should have been favored.

For the Longhorns, the value was straightforward: another loss would have made the rest of the season feel like damage control. Instead, Texas gets a meaningful win and a reason to keep looking ahead.

Ole Miss now faces the uncomfortable reality of needing help while also taking care of its own business.

Miami Handles Business at No. 1

No. 1 Miami 52, Pittsburgh 23

While other contenders were getting dragged into trouble, Miami delivered a comfortable victory over Pittsburgh.

There’s something to be said for making an ordinary win look ordinary. No overtime rescue. No last-second escape. No Sunday morning explanation about how the opponent was better than its record.

On a weekend like this, simply meeting expectations can strengthen your position.

Indiana Survives, UCLA and Utah Stay Perfect

No. 6 Indiana 13, Michigan 6 — Overtime

Indiana escaped Ann Arbor with an overtime victory. It wasn’t an offensive showcase, but road wins count just the same when the playoff picture starts tightening.

Hoosiers fans can debate the performance. They’ll have a much easier time doing it after a win.

No. 9 UCLA 28, Michigan State 10

UCLA kept its undefeated season going with a comfortable win over Michigan State. The Bruins avoided becoming another upset headline and continued building their case among the national contenders.

No. 10 Utah 21, No. 14 Houston 13

Utah won the ranked matchup against Houston and remained unbeaten. After the losses by BYU and Texas Tech, that result carried extra weight in the Big 12 race.

More Ranked Teams Find Trouble

The chaos extended well beyond the Top 10.

South Carolina beat No. 11 Tennessee 27–24, and Minnesota edged No. 15 Iowa 13–10, with both games decided by field goals as time expired. Two ranked teams, two final kicks, two long trips home.

Then Wisconsin beat No. 16 USC 24–7, adding another decisive upset to the board.

These are the Saturdays that make college football so entertaining—and picking winners so humbling. A strong résumé can explain what a team has accomplished. It doesn’t protect that team when the next game kicks off.

What It Means for the Playoff Race

Miami, UCLA and Utah are the only undefeated FBS teams remaining.

That leaves plenty of room for debate among the teams carrying losses, and plenty of opportunities for the picture to change again.

For the Wannamakeabet.com crowd, Saturday provided enough material to keep the league arguments going all week. Who’s overrated? Who deserves another chance? And who had UCF before kickoff instead of announcing it afterward?

Get your picks ready. Apparently, the rankings are just the opening argument.
