College Football Week 7 Preview: Big Spreads
By College Football Analyst Gabriel Rauch for Wannamakeabet.com
(3) Ohio State @ Purdue
This is the type of Big 10 game where every time you flip a coin it lands on a different side. The much more talented team vs the division rival at home who wants to win their super bowl, and make no mistake, playing Ohio State is the Super Bowl for Purdue. The Buckeyes are a juggernaut and their new quarterback Kyle McCord has been solid so far. On paper, Ohio State should cover the 18.5 point spread, however, their offense has been a bit slow to start games this year as we saw against Maryland. This is the game where it finally is going to hurt them as Purdue will be ready for this game and try to punch Ohio State in the mouth early, as they do every time they face Ohio State at home. Ohio State will win and probably have a 3rd quarter demolition, but the 18.5 points might be too much for them.
Pick: Purdue +19
Iowa @ Wisconsin
If you like laughing hysterically at football stuck in the past in 2023, this is the game for you. It is likely most betters will go with the under on this game, which is an incredibly low 34.5, but there is a better play. A 10 point spread may surprise betters who have not heard from Wisconsin since the beginning of the year, however, the Badgers have been on a tear recently, with Braelon Allen and company amassing 200+ yards on the ground three games in a row. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai has been exactly the type of player Wisconsin has needed, which is to just do his job and not throw stupid interceptions. Iowa are 5-1, however, their one loss was a 31-0 blowout at Penn State and four of their five wins have come at home. Also Iowa’s passing game is even worse than usual this year, which could spell disaster when facing a well coached Luke Fickel secondary.
Pick: Wisconsin -10
Auburn @ (22) LSU
The LSU Tigers have basically only played in insanely fun back and forth games this year, so it might surprise fans that they are such a large favorite (-11) over any team, let alone one in the same conference as they are. This is likely because the sportsbooks see that the Tigers quarterback Jayden Daniels is a Heisman candidate who has lit up almost every team he has faced this season. Auburn might have shown a stout effort against Georgia, but it came all from their defense. Auburn’s quarterback play just isn’t there this season and to beat this LSU team, you really need to be able to outscore them.
Pick: LSU -11
