An NFL sports betting teaser bet is a type of wager where you can adjust the point spread or the total score of a game in exchange for a lower payout. In a teaser bet, you can “tease” the point spread or total score by adding or subtracting points from the original line.
For example, let’s say the original point spread for a football game is 6 points, and you place a teaser bet of 6 points. If you bet on the favorite team, you can “tease” the line by subtracting 6 points from the original spread, so the new line becomes 0 points. This means that the favorite team now only needs to win the game outright for you to win the bet. On the other hand, if you bet on the underdog team, you can “tease” the line by adding 6 points to the original spread, so the new line becomes 12 points. This means that the underdog team can now lose by up to 11 points and you can still win the bet.
Teaser bets can also be used on totals, where you can adjust the total score of a game up or down by a certain number of points. The payout for teaser bets is lower compared to straight bets, but they can offer a better chance of winning by “teasing” the original line in your favor.
Example
Here’s an example of a football teaser bet:
Let’s say there are two NFL games that you want to bet on: the Green Bay Packers vs. the Chicago Bears and the Dallas Cowboys vs. the New York Giants.
The original point spread for the Packers vs. Bears game is -7 in favor of the Packers, and the total score is set at 45 points. The original point spread for the Cowboys vs. Giants game is -3 in favor of the Cowboys, and the total score is set at 50 points.
Now, let’s say you want to place a 6-point teaser bet on both games. You can adjust the point spreads and total scores for each game by 6 points in any direction you choose.
For the Packers vs. Bears game, you decide to “tease” the point spread in favor of the Packers by subtracting 6 points from the original line. This means the new point spread for the Packers is -1. You also decide to “tease” the total score by 6 points in favor of the under, making the new total score 39.
For the Cowboys vs. Giants game, you decide to “tease” the point spread in favor of the Giants by adding 6 points to the original line. This means the new point spread for the Giants is +3. You also decide to “tease” the total score by 6 points in favor of the over, making the new total score 56.
Your final teaser bet would be:
- Packers -1 and Under 39
- Giants +9 and Over 56
If both games play out according to your teaser bet, you would win the bet. However, the payout for a teaser bet is lower than a regular straight bet, as you are given an advantage in exchange for a lower payout.
